It reads your site the way a search engine starts to: does the homepage load, is it secure, and is Google allowed to index it? Those come first, because a site Google is kept away from cannot rank however many links it has.
Then the basics every page needs (a clear title and description, a main heading, structured data, a mobile setup), checked on your homepage and on up to eight more pages it finds through your links and sitemap, so a broken menu link or a dead sitemap entry shows up too.
Last, the two things that decide who recommends you: whether AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot) may read your site, and authority, your Ahrefs Domain Rating, which rises as relevant sites link to you. Every result is read from your site at the moment you run it, and nothing is estimated.

Whether your homepage loads and how fast the server answers, HTTPS, whether Google is allowed to index it (noindex tags and robots.txt), your sitemap and canonical tag, your title, meta description, headings, structured data, mobile setup, link previews, favicon, image alt text and homepage text. Then up to eight more pages found through your links and sitemap, for broken links, missing titles, descriptions and headings, and sitemap entries that are dead or redirected. It also checks that the http and www versions of your address lead to one site, that missing pages return a proper 404, and whether ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot are allowed to read your site. Last, your Ahrefs Domain Rating and your domain's history.
From evidence on the site itself: a store platform's own code, product pages in your sitemap, a cart with Add to cart buttons, a street address and phone number, or service and booking pages. It never goes by a word in your text. When the evidence is thin it doesn't guess, and the recommendations stay general.

Our own 0 to 100 measure: 60% search health from the checks and 40% authority from Domain Rating. Anything that stops Google indexing the site caps it at 40, because nothing else matters until that is fixed.
The audit shows two dates. The Wayback Machine shows how long the name has been online; the domain registry shows when the current registration began. A domain that expired and was registered again has both, and search engines generally don't carry an expired domain's old reputation over to its new owner.
